May 2016- The end of Sonya's spending party
It wasn't until June 1st when the bank, credit union actually, finally, finally, cut Sonya off from her mother's accounts. The conservatorship wasn't wine and roses for Mike, the brother of Sonya and the son of Carol. But what it did do was end Sonya's POA over Carol, allow Mike to talk to the bank, and in the beginning get some limited access to the money in those accounts. There was a lot of back and forth with the bank in June and it was all painfully slow, and add the fact that this (finances, Medicare, elder care, the legal stuff) was not in Mike's wheelhouse.

April 2016- Still spending
Mike, the brother of Sonya who had POA over their mother Carol, was still in the dark in April 2016. The bank, because Mike had no legal standing at that time, was being very vague about their mother's finances. All he knew was that there was about $20,000 in the account. He was hoping to become the emergency conservator of Carol in May if not earlier, and with that money get his mother out of Kirkwood Villa and maybe back to the Atria, where she was before Sonya got her hands on their mother's money. At this point he was still believing the lie that she was simply mismanaging the funds. With Sonya no longer caring for their mother Carol, he thought that money would still be there when he took over Carol's care, he was wrong.

March 2016- Token amounts, an accidental MF'er and theories
When Sonya closed the account in December and opened up a new one in her mother's name, it messed up a few reoccurring charges that later came to bite Mike (Carol's son & Sonya's brother) in the butt when he became their mother's conservator. Besides screwing up the CalSTRs pension, it also ended the payments to Medicare. Most people on social security, it seems, have their monthly payment taken out of their SS payments. Because Carol was on a pension and did not have SS payments her monthly Medicare payments came out of the account Sonya closed, for whatever reason. After 6 months of no payments, or as soon as Mike became the conservator in June, Carol, the diabetic with Parkinson's lost her medicare, particularly the parts that cover prescriptions and doctors visits. That was the first of many crises. Kaiser Permanente wasn't getting paid for their Medicare parts either. This endangered their mother's health. For about a week Carol was fcuked, because Mike had no clue of how to get insulin to his mom from the opposite side of the country with no Medicare. Sonya had fcuked over her mother, she thus was a motherfcuker.
At the time Mike was unaware of this in March. He thought, he believed his sister was trying to do right by their mother. He even bought her BS excuses of why she was leasing or whatever a luxury SUV. I can't find any texts from this month that are a complete sentence. But it was in this month we looked up Sonya's cosmetology license. We discovered her license was suspended due to "Family Support". She lied about that to her brother, said it was a mistake. He, wanting to make up for all the years he doubted her and other baggage issues, chose to believe her blatant lies. Folks, this is family and you'd rather believe a lie than know you're related to a horrible human being.
So theories...
Looking at the March 2016 bank statement, it looks as if Sonya might have given access to the account to her teenage son, that would explain all the Uber rides and iTunes purchases. That's one theory. Another theory is that Sonya was mentally delusional and believed that this was her account, with her money.

There is no excuse for this much activity with Carol's account, considering the majority of the funds are not being spent on Carol.

The world ending option- making your parent a ward of the state
I'm going to take a break from proving what Sonya did was a horrible thing and give some advice.
The option of making your elderly parent a ward of the state is always an option, an option of last resort.
It was first presented when Adult Protective Services (APS) were asking Mike, Carol's son, my husband, to get more involved. Mike was annoyed with APS because, the way he saw it, this government agency was trying to drive a wedge between him and his sister. He didn't trust them. So their suggestion that they become the conservator of Carol was one way for Mike to step away and let the state take over. That would have been easier. That would have saved us lots of money in legal fees and bonds, stupid $1,000 and $1,500 a year, non-refunded bonds. But if this route was taken, the state would have charged Sonya (yay) for what she did but Mike would not have any input in her care and whatever assets she still had would have been seized by the state. Our concern was that APS seemed more interested in prosecuting Sonya (a good thing) than helping Carol get out of the situation she was in. So we were concerned that Carol's care would fall through the cracks, and that she would remain in the poor living conditions of Kirkwood Villa with no change.
Thankfully, Mike did not need to travel to San Jose to appear before a judge to become the conservator of his mother's person and estate. He was on a conference call sort of thing. Because of the nature of the call Mike could hear other cases. There was another case before his where the family came before the judge to explain they could no longer care for an adult relative, and wanted the state to take over. So we were very aware that if it became too much or too hard, this was an option. And it did get too hard, it damaged our marriage (has since been repaired) and it put our adoption plans on hold (we now have an adopted son), but we did not pull that trigger. There was a moment, when Carol was feeling horribly low and she suggested that Mike give up on her and let the state take over. We knew she was speaking from a place of depression. Kirkwood was just a place to watch TV and wait for the end.
Mike made many mistakes in Carol's care, mainly due to the overly complicated nature of conservatorships and being on the other side of the country... most of it being on the other side of the country. We do not regret not making Carol a ward of California. Once we got her on the east coast it got easier. There were still health crises but it was comparatively easier in Maryland compared to when these things happened in California.
The state will take whatever assets are in the person's estate and there is no inheritance for the remaining family members. Now whether those assets will be used to better the situation of the depends. In Carol's case the cost of her care was more than what she was getting from her remaining investments that Sonya didn't steal, and her pension. If she didn't die, she was going to run out of money to cover the cost of her care by this summer, and we were going to have to figure out how to cover the costs. So it is hard to imagine that the state would put her in a better facility.
The state would have also put Sonya in prison if Carol became their ward. At the time, we didn't know, what we now know, and Mike is unreasonably loyal. This whole blog is a reminder of why he should press charges against his sister. But at the time we thought she had custody of her minor children and we were concerned about what would happen with them if she was put away. The kids were already traumatized by the separation of their parents, we didn't want to add to the sorrow. Now one kid is going to college and I think the other would be better off with her biological father.

Lies, lies and more lies- Hawaii trip
So in January 2016, Sonya went to Hawaii and below is the text exchange she had with her brother Mike about it.
However the bank statements say something different. However we didn't get the bank statements until after Mike became their mother's conservator, because of the financial eldercare abuse by Sonya. And I didn't notice the Hawaii expenses, until preparing the material for posting on this blog.
On January 13th she wrote -"Hi it's been fine I actually took advantage of my week with no one to care for and took a fight to Hawaii where I came to my friends house where I am staying I'll be returning on Saturday.. This trip has cost in total 600.00. Free food and lodging .." Well free for Sonya because she was using her mother's money. Maybe the token amount she was putting in was the $600. I don't know.
Sonya, goes on a vacation to Hawaii while Carol was stuck in a cheap miserable place with no activities. It was just a place to sit and watch TV and wait to die, which I guess was what Sonya was waiting for. Sonya doesn't get that neglect IS ABUSE, in her January 19, 2016 text to her brother.

February 2016- Sonya only contributed a token amount
So take a look at the end of the February statement.
In the short month of February Sonya managed to make 139 withdrawals and only one deposit. The withdrawals totaled up to $15,288.90, which the measly $663.00 that was contributed to the account, does not even begin to cover.
Here's a little something that is helpful to know. Carol (the mother and the victim of eldercare abuse by Sonya) has a very generous teacher's pension from CalSTRS, that was about $3k a month. Back on December 28, 2015, Sonya, for whatever reason, closed the account that CalSTRS was depositing funds into, moved the roughly $60K that was in there from Carol's retirement fund into a new account. CalSTRS takes at least one whole month to make direct deposit changes. So this month, as well as January and March, allow us to see what measly token amounts Sonya was depositing into her mother's account. For February it was about 4% of what was spent. As far as I could tell there was one charge and one check that actually went to the care of Carol. There was a February 3rd payment to Kaiser, Carol's health care provider/insurance for $345.00 (please go back to the February 2016 post, page 1) and check #104 for $3300 that was the monthly rent for Kirkwood Villa the elderly boarding house where Kaiser dumped Carol because she could not return to the 3 bedroom house she and Sonya were renting. Check #102 for $3850 was covering the rent for that house.

January 2016- Sonya goes to Hawaii with Carol's money!
Sonya, the POA for Carol, her adoptive mother, took a little trip to the island state of Hawaii in January 2016.
Why not?
Carol was either in the hospital or rotting in Kirkwood Villa, which I called old people prison. Apparently Sonya's two minor children were with their biological father, maybe. We have no clue, because that situation is so messed up, I don't even want to bother. Maybe she went with her loser boyfriend, maybe not, I don't know. When you're 3000 miles away and the family member in question only calls to yell at you, and lie to you (didn't find that out until later) you really don't know what is actually going on. So, Sonya took a little vacation, but she did not take a vacation from financially abusing her mother.
From what I can tell she was still in Hawaii on the 18th, maybe. On the 16th she spent $44.64 at Pho My. Who makes up these restaurant names? What did she run out of the $1000 she withdrew on the 13th? Considering Sonya's spending habits, that could be a possibility. On the 18th there is that Hawaiian Ticket, this time for $60, and Lahaina Chicken for $18.51 This is followed by an iTunes charge. Gotta have some tunes or a cool app for the plane ride back to San Jose, CA and stealing more of your mother's money.

I'll take a guess that the January 12th Hawaiian Ticket is a luggage fee, I have no idea. But I did notice 3375 Koapaka Street appears again on January 13th, but instead of saying San Jose it is for Honolulu, HI. I should note that Carol did not go to Hawaii. Anyway, maybe Sonya might have realized there would be a paper trail or she didn't want to use Carol's debit card in Hawaii, so on the 13th she took out $1000 of spending money at 200 Hamakua Drive, in Hawaii. Clever, we'll never catch on.

As the person with Power of Attorney (POA) Sonya was supposed to administer her mother Carol's funds for the care of Carol. Instead, Sonya squandered her mother's retirement funds, which ultimately left Carol alone and destitute. Sonya and Carol lived together from April to December 2015 and from the start Sonya began spending her mother's money as if it were her own, and as if it were lottery winnings.
I have documented what happened with Carol's account in 2015 to show how her pension and retirement funds were taken and spent. I also pointed out charges to debit card associated with the account that were obviously not for the care and well being of Carol. I can almost hear Sonya's excuses that she contributed to the account, that she gave up her career, and that it was really her account. Yes, Sonya contributed but her contributions were token amounts. It was akin to going out to eat where Carol paid for the meal and Sonya covered the tip. The career Sonya gave up was going from chair to chair as a cosmetologist. According to her brother, he doesn't think Sonya has worked at any one salon for longer than a year. She proposed opening up her own shop, with her mother's money of course. Considering Sonya's instability, that probably would have failed.
The year 2016 brings something new. Because they were living together in 2015, one could claim that most of the spending was for the benefit of Carol. In 2016 there can be no such claims. At the end of December 2015 Carol was in the hospital and then Kaiser put her in the cheapest elderly housing for someone in Carol's condition, Kirkwood Villa, at $3300 a month. So almost all the spending seen below is Sonya spending away her mother's retirement fund and making Carol destitute.

Dec2015-January 2016- Take the party to a new room, same venue
It's the end of December 2015. Carol, the mother/elder care victim, has run away from her abusive daughter Sonya, but the abuse goes on. We see in the image that Sonya has transferred $68,166.79 from one account into another, new account on the 28th. I do believe at this time Carol was in a Kaiser Hospital. So in some way this acknowledges a change. But in other ways Sonya just keeps spending her mother's retirement fund like it is her own personal piggy bank. She took $93.86 from a small account and put the money in this new account. As well as $25 from another tiny savings account.
It should be safe to say, the $663.98 of withdrawals, is spending Sonya did for Sonya, with Carol's money.

Either in November or December Carol called Mike, her son on the other side of the country in Washington, DC and asked to be taken out of there. Unfortunately, Mike had no clue what to do and believed his sister Sonya's side of the story. In November Sonya began (or I just started noticing) using her mother's money to by 'medicinal' weed. If that wasn't bad enough she moved in a loser boyfriend into the home Sonya rented (with Carol's money) who as far I we know did not contribute anything to the household. So now Carol was supporting two parasites.
At the end of the month, around Christmas, Carol escaped. For a while I imagined Carol out there with her walker slowly moving away from the suburban area out to the main road and flagging down help. But it seems she may have called 911 and got a ride to a Kaiser hospital. And it was there at the hospital she gave the staff a clue that she was being abused. That's when Santa Clara County Adult Protective Services people got involved. Another thing happened at the end of the month, Sonya closed this bank account and started a new account. There is a December 28th withdrawal of $68,166.79, and that went into a new account under Carol's last name. Why? Tis a mystery.

So we get a regular deposit from Carol's teacher's pension on the 1st of $3084. For most of this saga, it's been Carol's money, Carol's pension, Carol's retirement fund that has been fueling the party Sonya has been attending and orchestrating. Of all the purchases on this page, I just highlighted the one thing that was definitely for Carol, the December 2nd charge from the Kaiser Pharmacy.
On the 4th Sonya takes out $300. Why? Who knows. Also that same day there is a charge from Guitar Wars, a musical instrument store in San Jose. Carol does not play an instrument. Carol has Parkinson's. I will guess that it was for one of Sonya's kids Mike1 or N Kim.
Sonya was supposed to be the caretaker of Carol. Instead she abused her mother. Carol had to stop smoking, sometime in the 90s because she had to have some sort of heart surgery... because of smoking. Apparently she and her 1st husband smoked like chimneys. Mike, their son, has this huge hatred for smoking because of it. Their daughter, obviously, not so much. On the 8th, Sonya got something from Discount Cigarettes. I can only hope she did not smoke in the house or around Carol or either of the minor children.
Once again, on the 8th, she buying more from s cigarette shop, this time it's at Up In Smoke.
It looks like somebody has taken up the guitar or some musical instrument. I wonder which kid? Mike1 or N Kim? Well one thing I know, that $542.16 to Guitar Center on the 10th, was not for Carol's care. This is followed with another charge to a music place, The Starving Musician, on the 11th.
December 13th, Sonya buys more cigarettes, I guess.
Seriously, this woman, Sonya, seems to have a smoking problem. How many days have passed since she was last at someplace that sold cigarettes? Or is she buying smokes for her loser boyfriend too?
Okay, I highlighted a lot here. On the 16th there is a purchase from a beauty supply store. I will have to guess that's Sonya buying for work, as she's a hair stylist. Nothing to do with Carol's care. Then that same day there are other purchases from Amazon. I love Amazon. We've bought things for Carol from Amazon, but they were purchased with our own money. That we earned. From working. I have my doubts that the December 17th purchase from iTunes was for Carol.
I find the two purchases from Spy-Fly and Been Verified funny. Who is she looking for or in on? Is Sonya (with Parkinson's and other health issues, Carol is not doing this) trying to find something on her ex/ baby daddy? Maybe Sonya was looking up dirt on her loser boyfriend, to see how much of a loser he was?
On the 17th, a refund from Amazon. Don't know what Sonya is playing at, what's the scam? On that same date a $204.19 charge from T-Mobile for a phone Carol does not use. On the 18th there is a strange charge from Snapraise, some fund raising site. What's the scam?
December 19th we've got several charges. The Amazon charge, I don't remember why I highlighted that. South Bay Healing is for pot, mary jane, weed. On her mamma's dime. This is followed by a purchase from Up In Smoke on the 21st.
Ah the end. But before that, let's look at some end of the month purchases. December 23rd is for a Hotel booking. Sometime in 2016 Sonya runs off to Hawaii, maybe she was booking her hotel. Who knows? What I do know, this hotel was not for Carol. Anyway, that hotel booking is cancelled, so no more harm? I also doubt those withdrawals of $232.40, $500 and $380 were for Carol either.
Please point your attention to the big withdrawal on the 28th of $68166.79. Sonya moved that money to a brand new account. In that account we'll see more of the same crazy spending. But this time there is no pretense, no pretending that she's doing this for Carol, because in 2016 Carol doesn't live with Sonya anymore. We know that she isn't driving around in that vehicle she's leasing taking Carol to doctor's appointments. We know she isn't taking Carol to fast food joints, or buying groceries for Carol, because Carol doesn't live with Sonya anymore. In 2016 whatever is spent from the account, short of the $3300 a month to the old folks' boarding house, where Kaiser dumps Carol, that money is being spent on Sonya for Sonya.
